Well, I’ve done it again: I’ve broken my own record, and am now officially farther behind on blogging than I’ve ever been. Although the current trip’s posts have barely covered my first week in Bangkok, I have in fact already spent a week each in Ko Phangan, Phuket, Krabi, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore, plus nearly a month in Melaka and a second month in Bangkok. That’s over three months behind for the mathematically impaired, and still there’s no end in sight.

Will I ever manage to catch up? I sure hope so, but until then I guess all I can do is chip away a little at a time. I’ll start off by jumping the gun a bit and writing a preliminary “Thailand Observations” post – most likely I’ll have more to add later, but considering how much time I’ve already spent in the country, I figure I might as well toss out some general thoughts while they’re still (relatively) fresh in my mind 🙂

Before moving on to Ko Phangan, I’d like to stop and write a few posts on my general observations about Thailand. Starting with – what else? – the food.

In just one sentence: “Thai food is un-freaking-real.”

I’ve been to quite a few countries in my day, but never before have I experienced anywhere with such amazing, such cheap, such diverse an assortment of flavors. I think it’s pretty clear by now that I’m having a great time in Thailand – but even with all its amazing features, most of which I’ve yet to mention, the food is right at the top of the list.

Our final night in Bangkok has at last arrived. It’s been one wild ride, and I think I can safely say that neither Herb nor I feel anywhere near ready to leave. What we expected to be a fairly typical week of tourism had somehow turned into an experience one could normally only hope for after years of living in a city: underground afterhours nightclubs, yacht parties, VIP events, and two phonebooks overflowing with numbers.

Yes, Bangkok has taken good care of us. It’s without even an inkling of doubt that I say I will be back. Soon. In all likelihood…very soon. 😉

Thursday night was without a doubt the crown jewels of our Bangkok nightlife experience: a rooftop networking pool party at the Marriott Hotel for Thai movie stars, models, actors and celebrities. Once again we’d been invited by Jack, but due to various work obligations (and hangovers), only Herb and I actually made it out.

I have to admit, it’s not all that often that I feel intimidated by social situations – but here…well, let’s just say that from the moment we walked through the door it was obvious we were way outside of our element. Everything was pure top-class: a wine and hors d’vors party themed “Women in White and Men in Black,” the place was riddled with photographers, flood lights, stiletto heels, and grape-sized diamond earrings. Physically I came up to about chest-level on most of the guys there (and a good number of the girls, too). This was going to be an interesting night.

One of the many great aspects of travel is that it always seems to provide unexpected opportunities to reconnect with old friends from abroad. Even after all the trips I myself have taken, it never ceases to amaze me who manages to turn up in the most distant locations: friends from America in Asia, friends from Asia in Europe, friends from Europe in the Middle East. It truly is an international world.
