Throughout my travels, I’ve had my fair share of problems – but I’ve had my fair share of luck as well. A life on the road is a life of the unknown, and that’s part of what I love about it. One day you might find yourself getting pickpocketed by Bosnian gypsies, but the next, you maybe falling asleep in the spare bedroom of an Internet billionaire’s private oceanfront villa.

Our trip back to the mainland was characterized by bright blue skies and glassy-calm waters, though I personally barely noticed – for me, it was yet another journey spent recuperating from the previous evening’s (Christmas) festivities 🙂
Our route to Phuket took us first to the docks by taxi, then to Surat Thani by boat and finally to Patong by minibus. It was one combination ticket, meant to get us there no later than 7:30pm.
Or so we were told.

Now that the Full Moon Party was behind us, the time had come for our next decision: where to spend Christmas.
Originally we’d hoped to stopover in Ko Tao so Herb could get SCUBA certified, but as we already had plans to meet Stefan in Phuket on the 26th time was just too short.
So upon learning that Christmas on Phangan is even bigger than the full moon – and that our bungalow was holding a huge buffet-style dinner party – we decided just to extend. Besides, staying would give us the chance to hang out with Sarah, the Californian we met on our elephant tour, for a quick taste of what local life on a Thai Island might be like 🙂

Believe it or not, amidst all the partying we actually did manage to devote an entire day to some good old-fashioned tourism.
Two days after the Full Moon Party, we finally got around to renting those motorbikes we’d planned for our first day on the island.
