My main reason for settling in a small town like Krabi was to catch up on work and writing – but as mentioned in the previous post, that didn’t exactly go as planned. Still, I didn’t want to leave without doing at least one bit of tourism – so when my very last day turned out to be flawlessly sunny I decided I’d take a quick trip to the nearby Tiger Cave Temple.

Now that Herb was gone and I’d been on the move for a solid month, the time had come to do a bit of catchup. This meant Internet, photo-sorting, programming and blogging – no more nightlife and no more tourism, at least not for awhile.

So after spending one last (now overcast and stormy) night in Ao Nang, I packed up and returned to Krabi to find a more cozy and affordable setting than the beachfront resort town could offer.

…And I’m so glad I did – I honestly could not have envisioned a better spot to setup. Krabi had it all: insanely low prices, dozens of options for lodging, countless fantastic eateries, even a pay-per-use gym. Quite lucky actually, that my near-ideal “catchup spot” happened to be just down the road from where Herb and I had separated 🙂

The next day we decided that in order to be closer to the beach, we’d relocate to Ao Nang – so we packed up, caught a local bus, and checked into the first suitable place with a vacancy.

Due to its “resorty” appeal, Ao Nang easily costs triple Krabi Town, but with just a couple days until Herb’s departure no time could be wasted. And luckily, although 90% of the restaurants actually do charge American prices, we did manage find a single spot with all the Thai favorites. It was the source of nearly all our Ao Nang meals 🙂

It also sported a most hilarious menu. Some particularly memorable gems:

• Fried trick noodles with soya sauce
• Thai herp soup with chicken
• The falling meat
• Larb
• Cellophane noodles barked with prawns
• Pancake Nu Therapeutics
• Pancake ball head

As luck would have it, a small local street carnival was taking place just a few blocks from our Krabi guesthouse – so after making our way home from Ao Nang, we popped out for a bite.

Herb had done a quick walk-through the previous night while I stayed home catching up on emails, and he said there was something we just had to try.

Bugs.

Travel is all about trying new things…and for us, the consumption of grasshoppers and maggots would definitely be something new.

Once again, Krabi Town had a distinctly different feel from any of our previous stops. Probably most similar to Ko Phangan in its clearly backpacker-oriented vibe, the waterfront area is loaded with young budget travelers hopping from guesthouse to guesthouse. It had quite a nice feel actually; the restaurant at KR Mansion, our lodging of choice, was full of backpackers all our own age.

And in typical fashion, the staff was fantastic. I mentioned once before how friendly Thai guesthouse staff always seems to be; smiley, playful, fun and helpful. They don’t just take your money and show you your room, but laugh and joke as if you were lifelong old friends. KR Mansion was no different – and the costs were mindbogglingly cheap compared to everywhere we’d been. Half the price of Bangkok, and a quarter of Patong. $10 for a room.

Since we were both pretty tired from getting up so early we just kicked back the first night, agreeing not to set an alarm the following morning.

We woke up at noon. Doh.
