A small, isolated civilization in the middle of absolutely nowhere, the Muslim fishing village of Koh Pannyi seems to be oozing off the one peace of land to which it’s attached.

It’s a truly magical scene, and a difficult one to capture from below – but give it a Google for some aerial photos that reveal just how incredible a place it is.

Herb and I awoke bright and early (the first time in weeks it seemed) and headed straight for Phuket Town, starting point of the long bus ride off the island, around the Straits of Malacca, and down the coast towards Thailand’s most famous rockclimbing mecca, Krabi.

We had to get started early enough to leave time for a midway stop in Phang Nga – a sleepy little town known mainly as the jump-off point to James Bond Island, the villain’s hideaway in the classic film The Man with the Golden Gun.

When traveling solo, my typical trip consists of a balance between work, blog, exercise, sightseeing, and partying – with the emphasis shifted decidedly away from the latter. When traveling with a friend however, work and blog fall completely off the radar as nightlife assumes a far greater role. After all, having a like-minded buddy makes everything easier, safer, and altogether more enjoyable. Take my recent trip to Europe for instance; with Peder, I’d go out almost every night – but still arise early enough for a nearly full day of tourism.

For me, the past few weeks have become by far the most party-oriented trip of my life.

So with New Year behind us and Herb’s departure just on the horizon, we resolved that from now on, it would be nothing but good old-fashioned tourism. Our next stop was Phang Nga, a small coastal town, for a boat trip through mangrove forests, karst scenery, floating fishing villages, and a stop at James Bond Island.

…But before moving on I’d like to do just one last post on a few memorable encounters from our stay in Phuket:

I’ve been doing a horrible job of keeping up on my blog this trip…and it’s about to get even worse.

If you’ve been following my travellog, you probably noticed that I’m now in Vietnam. My 2-month Thai visa ran out about a week ago, and I figured that since I’d have to leave the country anyway I might as well knock another off the list – so I flew up to Hanoi, planning to work my way South to Saigon and through Cambodia before invoking one more 60-day Thai visa.

The first three nights on Phuket we stayed at Kelly’s fabulous villa, but as Stefan had to get back to Bangkok and Kelly had another friend on the way, Herb and I soon found ourselves relocating into the city.
