You know what I love about Japan?

Somehow, no matter which city I’m in or how many times I’ve been there, I always find myself thinking the same thing: “Man, this place is just so awesome, it would be fantastic to get a little apartment and try living here for a year or so.”

I thought it once about Kyoto, many years ago, and as circumstances had it that’s where I ended up. And even though there’ll always be days when I feel like getting the hell out of here, nine out of ten times when I leave my apartment to ride my bike somewhere – anywhere – I look around and just marvel at my surroundings. The politeness, the perfect cleanliness, the futuristic technology, and the ancient tradition. Continue reading »

As you probably know, this time around I’m in Japan on a tourist visa. This means that I’m limited to remaining in the country for a maximum of 3 consecutive months. Most foreigners in this situation resolve it by popping over to Korea for a weekend and returning with a nice, shiny new stamp in their passport. As for me, I’m about ready to try someplace new. My love for Kyoto will never die, but if I’m gonna be living in the most expensive country in this part of the world I might as well do it when the weather’s beautiful and the fun is plentiful. That means getting the hell out of here for Winter and coming back in the Spring 🙂

So what are my plans between now and then? Continue reading »

You know, because I no longer have time to blog as often or as completely as when I was living in Kyoto as a student, I’ve realized that my writing has drastically changed. Rather than mentioning all the little experiences that truly characterize everyday life here in Japan – like the cute little old lady who stopped to have a chat while waiting in line at the local sushi restaurant – I sit down once every week or so to document whatever happened to stick in my head since the last post. This invariably results in my focusing almost entirely on the wild weekends and not even mentioning vast majority of my time that’s spent on normal day-to-day life.

I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, it’s just the way things have gone. Well, guess what. Here goes: I’m gonna blog about work! Continue reading »

Note: This post is nearly 3 weeks out-of-date. Sorry! 🙂

Well, Summer in Japan has officially come to an end. The weather is still hot and the oceans are still warm, but the calendar says “Autumn” – so obviously, going to the beach is no longer an option. Because going to the beach is a summer activity!

So how did this season fare?

It was amazing. BUT, not quite as amazing as the previous. Mainly because of the new law that prevents Suma beach events from lasting through the night. Whereas last year people would be swimming and dancing in their boardshorts and bikinis until morning, this year everything packs up and closes at 9pm. Also, this year’s main stage was quite a bit farther from the station than last’s, which seemed to result in many people separating the “event” from the “beach” and making it feel like a rave that just happened to be on the sand rather than a true beach party.

Ah well, it was great while it lasted 🙂

I almost forgot to mention:

While I was sitting and chatting with E (see previous post), I mentioned that I’d just recently visited Cairo, his hometown. He asked where I stayed, saying that I should’ve gotten in touch as he just happens to be part-owner of a hostel right in the heart of the city.

A hostel called Lialy. Continue reading »
