Some of you may’ve noticed the changes that worked their way into this site layout a couple months back. Mixed in with my other work, I’ve been implementing a few features that’ve long been relegated to my low priority to-do list. These have included a variety of things, from slight visual improvements (i.e. a new favicon) to some basic convenience functionality (i.e. Flickr-style keyboard navigation on Photo of the Day). A few readers have asked how I’m able run my code on radar equipment halfway around the world. This is how: my little remote-access network setup, providing everything I need (and don’t need) while abroad: Cable TV, a backup server, VPN, SVN, SSH tunnel, Insteon, phone, and probably some other stuff I’m not thinking of – it’s been expanded a bit since this photo was taken.

Could it be true? I almost can’t believe I’m actually finished writing about Europe. It’s now early February, and the trip concluded last July – this is by far the farthest I’ve ever fallen behind on blogging. Why? Because from the day Peder and I met up in Belgrade, I actually didn’t write even one single post – so the whole second half of the trip was documented entirely from home.

Hopefully that’ll never happen again 😛

And the 2nd half of the story: the radars themselves. Note that these are just the controllers; the actual antennas & main head electronics are hidden underneath the desk. Both are on an Insteon network so I can power them on remotely, then control them with LogMeIn, connect to my VPN, and execute code directly with Visual Studio’s remote debugger. Handy : )

Regional Favorites

After the conclusion of any long-term trip, I find it interesting to think back and pinpoint my one favorite stop in the region; somewhere that stood out as particularly beautiful or fun or friendly, or all three. To choose the place I’d be most likely to return were I to find myself nearby once again, or even to setup shop and live for awhile should the opportunity arise.

Realtime note: Although I’m already nearly two months into my next trip through SouthEast Asia, to keep things chronological I’ll wrap up just one or two final posts from Europe and the US before opening up the next (huge) can of worms. I know, it’s taken me forever to get started this time. Sorry about that. As usual I’ve had a lot on my plate, but hopefully I can get all caught up before things start picking up once again 🙂

Doing a pull-up to say goodbye to Peder’s neighborhood friend…in his 2nd-storey window.

This is it. My big European adventure has finally come to a close.

A night out at Onkel Donald Ute, or “Uncle Donald Outdoors,” one of Oslo’s premier open-air nightclubs.

Like my first stop in Oslo, these last two days served primarily as a cool-down period. Initially we’d hoped to fit in a visit to Peder’s summer home in Lillesand, on Norway’s southern coast – but time was just too short. That’s alright. After the intense exertion of cycling from Oslo to Copenhagen with one of Europe’s biggest parties stuck right in the middle, I badly needed the break.
