I suppose I should pause the narrative for a moment and do a quick post on Malaysian food.

One of the most recognizable snacks throughout Malaysia is Roti, an oily Indian bread grilled up and served with dipping sauce. While first planning this trip back in November, I made just one note in the Melaka chapter of my Lonely Planet: “make sure I’m here on a weekend.” For among all of its cultural and historical sights, Melaka’s single most famous attraction – its “absolutely can’t miss event” – is the weekly Jonker Street Night Market.

Jonker Street (also known as Jonker Walk) is a smallish road through central Chinatown, which on Friday and Saturday nights turns to something of a street party. Packed to the gills with all manner of wacky performers, cultural shows, street peddlers, eateries, bars, handicraft stalls, fortunetellers, and everything else that makes for a fantastic night out in a foreign country, it’s billed as one of the reasons to come to Melaka.

Whenever I reach a new city where I plan to stay for awhile, I start off with the same three tasks:

1) Find a suitable room
2) Get a data plan for my phone
3) Find a gym

Now that 1 and 2 were handled, it was time to move on to necessity #3. So after checking into Tony’s and having a quick chat with my new neighbors (the British retirees hanging out in the lounge, pictured in the previous post), I headed out on foot.
