One of my favorite pieces of travel gear was also one of the cheapest: a tiny handheld speaker called the X-Mini II.

I’m sure you’re all well aware that I like to party, but prepartying or afterpartying in a silent hotel room is certainly no fun – nor is doing so to music played over a squeaky little cellphone speaker. Enter the X-Mini II; this golfball-sized contraption somehow manages to put out more sound than some speakers I’ve seen at double the size (and triple the cost). It’s provided hours of entertainment in hostels, parks, and even a bicycle trip across Denmark.

…That is, until just a few weeks ago when it mysteriously stopped working.

You may remember my post “Cocky Club Zouk” from Kuala Lumpur – about the supposed best nightlife spot in the city. Neither Michael nor myself were particularly impressed. But as it turns out, Zouk KL is actually just the little brother of Zouk Singapore, where it all began. Zouk has won the Singapore Tourism Board’s “Best Nightspot Experience” award 6 times in total, ranking consistently on DJ Magazine’s list of Top 10 clubs in the world. At the moment it’s #9.

This I had to see.

For the first time this trip I just checked myself into a backpacker’s dorm.

Yuck. I’ve gotten spoiled 😛

Despite being exactly twice as expensive as my huge private double with a balcony in Melaka, I suddenly have no privacy at all, no security, and the hassle of hitting my head on the ceiling while getting up from my 2nd-level bunk. Plus, the way the hostel described itself online was unbelievably misleading. They claimed to have 4 rooms of 6 beds each, but the reality is more like one gigantic room with cubicle half-walls dividing it into partitions. A 24-bed dorm should not be misrepresented as a 6-bed. That’s not cool.

My whole standard of living is right about to change.

One of the ways I can afford to travel so much – aside from the obvious fact that I work on the road – is through careful planning. I always schedule periods of quick, efficient travel to overlap with expensive countries, while slow-paced work-on-the-road segments overlap with the cheapies. So although I may still be months behind on blogging, because of the cost of living in Singapore – by far the highest in the region – I plan to devote every minute possible to enjoying myself.
