After saying my final goodbyes to Joe and Selene, I dropped off my bags for one last night at Chung King mansions – the hole-in-the-wall backpacker haven across the bay from Hong Kong Island where I’d spent my very first night in the city. While I’m sure my gracious hosts would’ve offered to let me stay one more night, I still had some things to do before crossing the border into China and felt like I’d be imposing to extend yet again. This would’ve been my third extension.

Man, coming back to ChungKing after spending a month in Admiralty really highlighted just how different my experience of Hong Kong could’ve been. Continue reading »

Well, I’m down to my last weekend in Hong Kong.

When I arrived from Mainland China nearly one month earlier, my plans were simple: give my extra suitcase to Fan (a friend visiting from the States), spend one weekend out partying, a few days to take in the sights, then head back across the border. But when Joe made the generous offer of allowing me to stay at his spectacularly luxurious apartment right in the midst of the island, the option of hanging around until New Year suddenly seemed a lot more appealing. Somehow I can’t hear the word “Macau” without immediately thinking of John Rhys-Davies in the 1980’s miniseries “Shogun” – when he talked of the city’s significance in the Portuguese silk trade between Japan and China.

Noz, one of my oldest and closest friends, just returned from his first ever trip to a non-Western country. A couple weeks into his vacation he sent me the following e-mail:

Now, after spending a little time in Beijing, Singapore, Thailand, and Cambodia, I can see your fascination with Asia. It is really another world in places and it puts our existence in Los Angeles into a huge, global perspective. There was a time when moving from LA to NYC felt like a huge change, but now I can see just what an insignificant difference that really is. Even NYC to Nebraska is feeling a bit minor compared to this part of the world. Continue reading »

Happy New Year!!!

Man, I can’t believe 2009 is already here. It feels like only yesterday I was celebrating 2008 with my high school buddies in Hollywood, California.

But then, it certainly has been a tremendous year – without a doubt my busiest ever. The last twelve months have taken me to four continents and ten countries. I’ve danced away the night for Brazilian Carnaval, stood at the holiest spots for three of the world’s biggest religions, and snapped a photo at the heart of the only standing Wonder of the Ancient World. I’ve spent nights in filthy hole-in-the-wall backpacker lodges, luxurious five-star suites, small Japanese apartments, planes, trains, boats, and even my old childhood bedroom.

And the adventure hasn’t ended yet.
