“With an emerald-green lake, a picture-postcard church on a tiny island, a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff, and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke as backdrops, Bled seems to have been designed by some god of tourism.”

At first I was doubting if I should use one of only two planned days in Slovenia to visit a small mountain town, possibly at the cost of seeing the capital city itself, but the above description pushed me over the edge. Thank you again, Lonely Planet. You never let me down.

My judgment for “best hostel I’ve ever been to” has once again been updated: Hostel Celica in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Hostel Celica is listed as one of Lonely Planet’s 25 “must visit” lodgings. Actually a former prison, the guest rooms themselves are artistically revamped cells – each designed by a different group of artists and architects. The facilities are spotlessly clean, and offer every amenity you’d expect of a high-class hotel: outdoors gardens and balconies, a bar, a restaurant, computers with internet, even a Middle Eastern-style lounge complete with hookahs.

On the way home from my little outing in the Buda Hills it began pouring once again. This worried me because of the evening’s plans to attend Kitti’s birthday party in the park – but luckily it let up after only an hour, and since I had no easy way of getting in touch with the group (to verify that it was still on), I simply assumed it would be and headed out.

I was right, but unfortunately meeting up turned out to be a far bigger challenge than expected.

The cog railway up into the Buda Hills was absolutely the most bumpy, rickety train I’ve ridden in my entire life. I don’t think they could’ve made it rougher if they tried. But it was good fun, and the young toddler bouncing up and down as he hummed to the rhythm of the train a riot to watch – nearly everyone in the car had a big smile the whole way up.

Not to mention that thanks to my handy Budapest Card, the ride was completely free of charge 🙂
