Prior to my day of running around looking for my great grandfather, I slept for only a brief four hours. Even though I didn’t return from Traf贸 Club until nearly 5:30am on Friday morning I wanted to see and do as much as I possibly could before catching a train to Ljubljana first thing Saturday, so hours were at a premium. But as it turned out I ended up spending so long running around in the outskirts – nearly six hours in total – that by the time I made it back to the city, the railway office was already closed. It looked like I’d be staying until Sunday after all.

Though I woke up hungry, tired, and a bit hungover after my long night at Traf贸 Club, I felt like a million bucks.

TANKTOP WEATHER!

And this time I mean real tanktop weather – not just a short break in the clouds, but visible blue skies in every direction and soft, warm breezes. Oh man how different my visit would’ve been if it’d felt like this throughout the entire stay.

Ever since my arrival I’ve been waiting for a warm day to visit Budapest’s famous thermal baths. Although the most well-known images do show huge indoor pools under vaulted ceilings and skylights, most of the complexes in fact contain numerous outdoor pools as well – some seem almost like mini waterparks, with wave pools and lazy lagoons. One or two of the photos I’ve seen even reminded me of the lavish swimming pools of Las Vegas – and I certainly didn’t want to go to a complex like that on a rainy day, limiting myself only to the chlorinated indoor air. That would defeat half the purpose.

But alas, such a warm day never came. So at the first hint of sunshine on my last Thursday in Budapest, I quickly grabbed my swimtrunks and dashed out the door – Gellert Baths, arguably the most famous, is just a few blocks from where I’m staying so I figured I could make it there before the clouds once again consumed the sky.
