“Time for a good, long sleep.”

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you’ll know that whenever I end a post with something about sleep…sleep is not what I get.

Somewhere around 8am, one of Peder’s neighbors decided to demolish his condo. Quite literally. I’m talking belt sanders, jackhammers, power saws, and every other type of noise-producing equipment you could possibly imagine. It sounded like they were one inch from my face.

After talking about it for nearly three years, I&#8217;m finally here. Peder&#8217;s hometown of Oslo, Norway.After talking about it for nearly three years, I’m finally here. Peder’s hometown of Oslo, Norway.

When I first started planning this trip, Peder told me our only limitation was that we had to be back in Oslo by June 23rd. That’s the date of the nationally celebrated Midsummer Party; the longest day of the year, when everybody in Norway gathers their friends and family for a late-night picnic in a park, by a lake, or even in their own backyard. Beers and BBQ’s are the order of the day, as the sweet smell of roasting hot dogs fills the air and every public space seems to overflow with people having fun.

Ever since Peder and I met in Gold’s Gym Kyoto back in 2007, we’ve been great friends. We’ve traveled to the far corners of the globe together, partied across three different continents, and exchanged more e-mails than I can count. Yet neither of us has uttered even a single word to the other’s family – nor paid a visit to the other’s home.

Now, three years later, that’s finally going to change. I’m currently descending over the Oslo fjord and into Peder’s homeland. I’m about to land in Norway.

Krakow

Krakow is Poland’s second largest city, and home to the first “Historic Old Town” to ever be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Packed with beautiful streets and buildings dating back to medieval times (most of which avoided any major damage in WWII), it has long been the country’s top tourist draw card. Needless to say, I was thrilled to stop in for a visit.

But as it turned out, Peder had already spent more than a week there on a trip several years prior. So to give us both a fair chance to maximize our time experiencing someplace new, we agreed to allocate no more than a half-day in the city; just enough for a quick run-through before catching our 1:20pm flight to Oslo.

“Besides,” he assured me, “Krakow’s historic center is actually quite small. A half day should be more than enough to get a sense of what it’s got to offer, at least from a touristic standpoint.”

He was absolutely right.

Sleepless Sleeper

Due to our unpleasant little encounter in Lviv Station two days earlier, Peder and I were concerned that we might be in store for one more police shakedown on our way to the train to Krakow – so just to be safe we left the hostel over an hour in advance.

Thankfully, we made it onboard without an issue. The only challenge that now remained was to cross out of the country; it would be our last and final bout with the most corrupt police force I’ve ever experienced. For this trip, at least 😉
