The Polish train from Lviv to Krakow was absolutely the nicest I’ve ever ridden, bar none.

At only two cars long, it was also one of the shortest – especially considering how it covers an 8 hour journey that includes both an international border crossing and a rail gauge conversion.

So what was it that made this little train so amazingly nice?

To address a continuing stream of support and feature requests for WP-FB AutoConnect, the most popular of my 3 WordPress plugins, I’ve decided to create my first premium plugin (or more precisely, my first premium add-on to a free plugin). It ties into WP-FB-AutoConnect’s hooks and filters to enable a rich set of additional functionality, documented here. Although I’ve more or less stopped adding features to the core itself, I figure that charging a few bucks for more “specialty” options could provide a good compromise, helping offset the time cost of maintenance and justify future development. The first day in Lviv I was utterly exhausted, thanks to our considerate little roommate on the overnight train from Kiev. I was also feeling pretty behind on life, as I hadn’t replied to a single email, reviewed a single Anki flashcard, written a single line of code or jotted down a single blog note in days. Especially considering the eventful conclusion to our stay in the Ukrainian capital (including the near-fight on the party boat, night at Club Patipa, bling shop, and beach party) I really wanted to jot down something before kicking off yet another whole new city.

So once we picked a hostel and got settled I suggested that Peder go ahead without me, opening up a bit of time to catch up on sleep and on work – even if it would mean skipping some of Lviv’s touristic offerings.

I passed out the instant my head hit the pillow. And when I awoke an hour or so later, he was still there – to give me one more chance to reconsider, insisting that I’d regret it if I forfeited one of our only two days in such a historically famous city. So I succumbed. But only after catching up on emails and Anki reviews. I guess blogs would have to wait just a little bit longer 😛

The train from Kiev to Lviv was the first proper sleeper I’d been on during this entire trip: an individual room with four separate bunks.

Unfortunately it was also the first time I had to share my berth with a family of three, the youngest of whom didn’t seem to understand the concept of “inside voice.”

Both Peder and I slept fantastically until around 5am when the little motormouth opened his eyes. I swear he must’ve had a ten second memory, because he’d yell something at the top of his lungs (to one of his sleeping parents about 2 inches away), they’d shush him, everyone would doze off, then ten seconds later he’d do it again. This continued for hours, so I didn’t get a wink of sleep until our arrival around 10am.

Four hours of sleep…just what I needed. Thanks a lot, kid 😡
