Welcome to Aarhus.

Sitting right on the coast of the Kattegat Sea, with restaurant-lined canals, a bustling Old Town, and a great social atmosphere, my fourth Danish city was…well…every bit as pleasant as the preceding three 🙂

In fact even Peder, who’s been just about everywhere Denmark has to offer, was quick to convey his fondness for the country’s second largest city. The very first time he rode through (also on his way to Roskilde) he was all on his own. Yet he still managed to get invited to a private house party, where he remained until late the following morning. Now that’s what I call hospitality.

We awoke in Randers to find ourselves amidst a vast open park. It was the first time since Norway we’d managed a true full nights’ sleep, so after packing up camp and making a quick morning supply run, we decided to burn a couple hours in town. The destination: Randers’ one main tourist attraction, a tropical forest enclosed in an enormous set of biodomes.

When we pulled into Randers just before 11, we found a city virtually abandoned. Unlike the bustling Aalborg, not a single business seemed to be opened.

…Well, actually, not two. The only place in town still working was – oddly enough – a small pizza parlor operated by a friendly Turkish duo.

We walked through their doors starving, stinky, exhausted. We walked out with ear-to-ear smiles. Those guys were among some of the friendliest I’ve encountered.

Camping is so pleasant.

Although I’d been hauling my tent and sleeping bag around for this entire trek through Europe, today was the first time I’d used either…and despite the short night’s rest I just loved it. There’s something about sleeping in the outdoors – hearing the chirping birds, breathing the cool clean air, and waking up to the glisten of natural sunlight. It’s a feeling of freedom. All you need is to open your padlock and unzip your tent…and you’re home.

Although we only spent one short evening in Aalborg, I actually felt quite sad to be leaving. Something about it was just so charming, so welcoming. But with 3 days of riding still ahead, we had to press on.

After a beautiful (but gruelingly strenuous) day’s ride, leaving those endless grassy fields behind to enter another of Denmark’s welcoming cities felt like the triumph of a lifetime. And I could tell from the start that we had a great night ahead of us.

Many of you might expect Denmark’s best nightlife to be in Copenhagen, the country’s capital and largest city. But you’d be wrong. In fact, it’s Aalborg – a comparatively small college town – which holds that undisputed title. And it just so happened that Aalborg was our first stop on the path from Oslo to Roskilde. It also just so happened to be graduation weekend, when open-aired trucks overflowing with celebrating graduates circle its streets honking their horns and cheering with anyone who passes by. I was utterly exhausted from the ride…but could I really miss out on a night like this?
