The following is a continuation of Roskilde: Party of a Lifetime. If you haven’t already, please read that post first.


The conclusion of Roskilde was – just like the festival itself – quite unlike anything I’d ever seen. Even after a solid week of partying, nobody would allow it to end. The stages had shut down. The music was turned off. But that didn’t stop them. People began making their own music – playing the dumpsters and lampposts like drums and cymbals. Those who had instruments would climb a tree and perform for the crowds, which continued dancing as if nothing had changed.

For those of you who’ve attended the Burning Man festival in Nevada, you’ve no doubt already noticed its similarities to Roskilde. And while I myself have never been to The Playa, I have looked into it pretty extensively – and think that it may indeed be the most Roskilde-like festival on Earth.

Roskilde. This is the post I’ve been both awaiting and dreading. How could I possibly describe an experience like this? The only other time I can remember being at such a loss for words was…Brazilian Carnaval.

There have truly been few experiences in my life which could compare to Carnaval – but within moments of passing through the entrance to Roskilde, I knew that this would be one of them. I’d just spent four solid days on a bike; I was sweaty, sore, and exhausted. But the scene that unfolded in front of me made me want to do nothing but party.

And the festival hadn’t even started. This was just the preparty.

The final day’s ride was by far the easiest – ironic, because it’s also the day I’d been dreading the most. According to Peder’s recollection, the trip from Aarhus to Roskilde had taken far longer than any other – yet it turned out to be no worse than the previous three. His impression was no doubt due to memories of riding late into the night, easily attributable to a sluggish start after a fantastic houseparty in Aarhus. Plus the addition of a boat ride in the middle.

And just like Peder on his previous visit, we once again found ourselves riding late into the night. But conditions were great. Temperate, no wind at all, and not even a hint of a hill or incline. Just another pleasant ride through the vast Danish countryside.
