This Monday afternoon, my dad’s girlfriend of over seven years passed away from cancer. Although her original diagnosis was that she wouldn’t make it past six months, she fought tirelessly and suffered for over two years, refusing to give up no matter how hopeless things seemed. Her battle was one of the most incredible and at the same time saddest things I’ve ever witnessed.
Irene was an astonishingly kind and selfless woman. Although she lived halfway across the country and saw me only rarely, she always kept abreast of my life through my father, helped and supported me in any way she could, and relished in his stories of our friendship and companionship. How such a kindhearted person could be taken at such a young age will forever remain a mystery.
Irene McGuire, you will be missed.
