For months now, I’ve been looking forward to returning to Thailand. I had an incredible time here last year, and Halloween – one of my very favorite holidays – seemed like the perfect opportunity to celebrate a return.

But then all this flood mess started.

Alright ladies and gents, here’s what I’m going to do.

As you all know (because I’ve mentioned it about 80,000 times), I’m still way behind on writing. And I would very much prefer not to be.

As you also all know, my next chunk of travel corresponds to a trip with Peder through Vietnam. This just so happens to be by far the most high-intensity period about which I’ve not yet written: three weeks of round-the-clock tourism and/or partying. And as it more or less fits nicely into a self-contained “block,” skipping it – or rather super-summarizing it – will give me a much better chance of catching up without otherwise affecting the continuity of the narrative.

Note that I do hope to come back and properly document this trip, and I will of course hang on to all my photos and notes until then. But for now, in a desperate attempt to get back to realtime, I’m going gloss over it, saving myself from what would’ve easily taken 30+ posts to complete.

Well, the day has finally come. After pushing back our meeting for well over a month, I’m at last leaving Europe and flying across the world to connect with Peder in Vietnam – resuming a trip that I put on hold almost five months ago.

With just a few days in Bulgaria, I wouldn’t be able to stray very far – so I pulled out my trusty Lonely Planet and scanned for quick day trips within a few hours of the capital.

The choice was easy enough.

“Bulgaria’s most appealing city, Plovdiv has it all – Roman walls and theatre seats spilling out under walkways and aside hills, and a compact, cobbled 19th-century revival-era district with open-air cafés frequented by the city’s students. Bulgarians love it, some foreigners give it a shrug after a day, but any Bulgarian site in the hunt for ‘country’s best’ must reckon with The Plov.”

As previously mentioned, one of my main reasons for flying out of Sofia rather than Belgrade was to secure a visa for Thailand.

American passport holders are automatically given 30 days on arrival, but if you preapply, you can get 60 instead. Pay a bit more and you can turn this into a triple-entry visa, in effect giving you a full 180 days (provided you stay until each last possible day).
