Two noteworthy things happened on the way to Dubrovnik.
First, I got a new stamp in my passport – the first since landing in Munich more than six weeks ago. I was now outside the Schengen Visa zone, where each new country would once again mean a new currency, new border controls, and new passport stamps. Since I’d renewed my passport just days prior to leaving on this trip, I’d started with a clean slate – an empty set of pages. Time to start changing all that 🙂

It’s never been my plan to go much farther South than Zagreb. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my extensive travels, it’s that (contrary to my earlier opinion) an all-round hyperpaced trip is not the way to go. On my first backpacking trip ever – through Western Europe – my friends and I covered eleven countries in only five weeks, and although it was great to see such a huge variety of places, all you can do in such a short one or two day visit is glance at only the most famous and touristy of sights. It leaves no time to just kick back and feel the vibe of a place, or more importantly, make local friends – one of the most rewarding things about traveling.

I said it before, I’ll say it again: Hostel Celica is seriously the best hostel I’ve ever been to. I *REALLY* wish I had some more time to stay – both in Slovenia and in this hostel specifically.
When I returned from my day at the caves I’d intended to spend an hour just going through photos before hitting the sack. But the plan changed when I stepped into the lounge and heard a fantastic live band performing right in the middle of a rowdy young crowd. Apparently many of the faces around Hostel Celica at night are actually guests staying elsewhere – they just come by in the evening because it’s so much fun. On this particular night, people were literally spilling out onto the outdoors courtyard – it felt more like a jazz lounge / restaurant / bar / hookah bar than a budget lodging.
I’m loving Slovenia, and I’m adoring Hostel Celica 🙂

By the time I made it back to the hostel at 9pm my sickness was truly in full swing from the long day of physical exertion – hiking, mountain climbing, and cycling as fast as I could. But the only 24hr pharmacy in town, where I’d planned to pickup a pack of emergency vitamin C, had a massive line so I decided to just wait it out. By total luck I’d made it home just in time for the hostel’s Monday night BBQ – 5 euro for all you can eat meat – so in virtually no time I was in bed and resting up for yet another long day in Slovenia.
