I am in the midst of planning on doing something very similar to what you are doing, with more aspect on the backpacking/freelance programming. While doing some research I came across your blog and it is really inspirational to see someone doing what I have always dreamed of. I am going to wait until I graduate so I have a little less than a year and a half to plan and prepare. If you could take the time to answer some questions that would be great.

Starting off as a freelance programmer, how hard is it to find work and where are the best places to work?

How many of these companies/customers want you to relocate for the time being while doing their development?

How is the pay compared to your daily expenses while traveling around the world? Particularly Europe and tropical regions?

Any other tips that you would give to someone wanting to do, exactly what you are doing?
