A few months ago Alanna, a friend of mine from the LA area, gave me Naomi’s e-mail address. Naomi was one of Alanna’s friends from when she was studying abroad here in Kyoto last year. We got to know each other over the Internet, finally meeting for the first time on New Years (we went together to the shrine I mentioned in my previous post), and she invited me to a traditional Japanese-style New Years dinner with her family in Uji (near Kyoto) on the night of January 2nd. WOW was New Year’s ever cool. I met up with a friend and we went to Shi-jyo dori in Gion, Kyoto where literally THOUSANDS of people gathered at a shrine to celebrate the holiday. The shrine was packed with concession stands and games, and to add to the coolness, a few minutes before midnight it started to snow!
