Noz, one of my oldest and closest friends, just returned from his first ever trip to a non-Western country. A couple weeks into his vacation he sent me the following e-mail:
Now, after spending a little time in Beijing, Singapore, Thailand, and Cambodia, I can see your fascination with Asia. It is really another world in places and it puts our existence in Los Angeles into a huge, global perspective. There was a time when moving from LA to NYC felt like a huge change, but now I can see just what an insignificant difference that really is. Even NYC to Nebraska is feeling a bit minor compared to this part of the world.
I’d write more but my laptop battery is giving out and there is no available converter here at the moment. Ah, Asia 🙂
Will write more tomorrow,
I’m so glad you enjoyed yourself and started to scratch the surface of a group of cultures so many worlds away from our own. Take my word for it: the longer you spend here, the more mysterious and interesting it becomes. There’s so much out there in the world just waiting to be experienced – something that many people back home just really can’t understand, until they’ve seen it for themselves. But sometimes all it takes is one trip…and you’re hooked 🙂
I can’t wait to show you around Kyoto, some day.
